Junior PostgreSQL Database Administrator (DBA)

On behalf of our Oil & Gas client, Vaquarii is seeking a Junior PostgreSQL Database Administrator (DBA) for a full-time position.

• The right candidate will play a key role in maintaining database availability, performance, security, and reliability while developing valuable experience in cloud-hosted database environments.
• Services would be carried out onsite from downtown Calgary headquarters.

Responsibilities:

• Perform routine PostgreSQL database backups and restoration testing.
• Monitor database performance, availability, uptime, and system logs.
• Assist with database maintenance activities, including vacuuming, indexing, and health checks.
• Manage user accounts, permissions, and access controls.
• Support database security initiatives and compliance requirements.
• Assist senior DBAs with schema changes, migrations, and database upgrades.
• Troubleshoot database-related issues and escalate complex problems as required.
• Monitor and respond to alerts generated by database monitoring tools.
• Document database configurations, procedures, and operational activities.
• Assist development teams with database-related requests and basic query optimization.
• Participate in disaster recovery and business continuity testing activities.
• Support cloud-based PostgreSQL environments.

Must Have Skills:

1. 1–3 years of experience supporting PostgreSQL databases in a production environment.
2. Basic understanding of PostgreSQL architecture and administration.
3. Experience performing database backups, restores, and routine maintenance activities.
4. Knowledge of database monitoring and troubleshooting techniques.
5. Familiarity with SQL and basic query performance analysis.
6. Understanding of database security principles, user management, and access controls.
7. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
8. Excellent communication and documentation abilities.

Nice to Have Skills:

1. Experience with PostgreSQL extensions, replication, clustering, or high-availability configurations.
2. Familiarity with scripting languages such as Bash, Python, or PowerShell.
3. Exposure to AWS RDS, Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL, or Microsoft Azure database services.
4. Experience with monitoring tools such as pgAdmin, Prometheus, Grafana, or similar platforms.
5. Understanding of DevOps concepts, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure automation.
6. Exposure to Linux administration and command-line environments.

Job Location:

• Downtown Calgary, Alberta
• 5 days on-site schedule

• This role will support critical operational, analytical, and business systems used across the company.
• You will work closely with application developers, infrastructure teams, the Data & Analytics team, and business stakeholders to ensure database reliability, performance, scalability, and operational excellence.
• A key focus of this role will be supporting the daily operational and analytical needs of the Data & Analytics team.
• This role is ideal for someone with some PostgreSQL administration experience who enjoys troubleshooting, automation, performance tuning, and collaborating across technical teams.
